A flooded environment and refugee camps are two of the easiest sets of conditions for the spread of disease. Combined, they are even worse. Refugees usually have the highest risk of mortality immediately after reaching their country of asylum (here being Asgard), as they frequently arrive in poor health and are completely dependent on their benefactors. During this time, the most common causes of death include diarrheal diseases, measles, acute respiratory infections, malaria, malnutrition and other infectious diseases. Therefore, we would like every incoming refugee to be screened for disease and injury to make sure that the overall health condition of the camps will not deteriorate.
Apart from these check-ins, here are simple steps to avoid infection and the spread of pathogens:
(1) Standing water is your enemy. Nothing spreads malignant bacteria faster. All dirty and used water should be disposed of as quickly as possible after use. Water should never be left standing under any circumstances. Clean water should be readily available so that unclean water does not have to be reused.
(2) All injuries should be seen to immediately. Broken bones should be set or healed and wounds should be tended to in order to avoid infection. No injury is too small to warrant notice. A simple scrape may not seem like much, but under these conditions can become much worse. Don’t delay before seeing a healer or doctor about any new injuries.
(3) Use only designated areas for the disposal of waste and to relieve yourself. This should be self-explanatory, but allowing the lines between lived space and latrine to become blurred will not end well. For anyone. Don’t do it.
All incoming persons should be seen at the health check-in point before entering the camp. This will help contain any emerging concerns. Anyone who doesn’t comply is a risk to both themselves and others.
